As we all know, zirconia ceramics are widely used in aerospace, electronic components, biomedical and other industries because of its excellent high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and high hardness.

However, a class of materials with such a strong hardness as zirconia ceramics is undoubtedly difficult to process, so what tools are used to process zirconia ceramics? Let's take a look at our experience in processing zirconia ceramics from Huamin Ceramics over the years.

Diamond has the advantages of very high hardness and wear resistance, extremely low friction coefficient, high elastic grinding capacity, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient and small infectivity with non-ferrous metal materials. It can be used for high-precision machining of non-metallic hard and brittle raw materials such as high-purity graphite, high-metal composite materials, polymer materials and other ductile rare metal raw materials. There are various types of diamond tools, and the characteristics are obviously different. The structure, preparation method and main use of different types of diamond tools are quite different.

1. Pure natural diamond (ND) tool

Pure natural diamond. The ND tool is the hardest chemical substance known to the mineral at this stage, and it is mainly used to make the tool lathe turning tool. Natural diamond tools are mainly used for ultra-precision machining of copper and copper alloys, precious non-ferrous metals such as gold, silver and rhodium, as well as special parts

2. Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tool

In order to improve the ductility and forgeability of PCD cutter head, PCD and carbide cutter body are often made into synthetic polycrystalline diamond composite cutter head (PCD).

The processing range of PCD tools has expanded from traditional metal cutting to stone processing, wood processing, metal matrix composites, glass, engineering ceramics and other materials; PCD tools are very suitable for stone, hard carbon, carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP ), man-made panels and other difficult-to-machine non-metallic materials processing. Machining these materials with PCD tools can effectively avoid defects such as easy tool wear.

3. Diamond Thick Film Welding (CVD) Tool

Diamond film has the characteristics of high hardness, wear resistance, small friction coefficient and good thermal conductivity. It is an ideal material for manufacturing cutting tools of non-ferrous and non-metallic materials. There are two types of synthetic diamond film cutters: diamond film coated cutters and diamond film welded cutters.

4. Boron Nitride (PCBN) Tool

PCBN tool is an artificial cubic boron nitride tool, which can maintain high hardness at high temperature, and is mainly used for processing iron parts.

Since zirconia ceramics have high wear resistance, diamond tools are the most suitable for processing. The hardness of zirconia ceramics is higher than that of amethyst and lower than that of diamond, so we will use diamond tools to process zirconia ceramics.
